Top Safety Honors for Refining

Safety is one of our core values, and something we all care deeply about. When each of us commits to operating safely and working in the right way every day, great things happen: No one gets hurt.

That commitment was recognized at six Phillips 66 refineries by the national 2016 American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) Safety Awards. A committee of our peers chose winners based on safety metrics, programs and leadership.

The Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex received the 2016 Distinguished Safety Award, the highest industry recognition.

“In our industry, winning this award is like winning the Super Bowl,” said Larry Ziemba, executive vice president of Refining. “Lake Charles continues to prove that ‘zero’ is possible!”

Bayway, Billings, Rodeo, Santa Maria and Sweeny all received the Elite Silver Award, which recognizes the top 5 percent of all U.S. sites that have attained the highest industry safety performance and demonstrated excellent program innovation and leadership over time.

Of the approximately 275 sites that were eligible for the awards, only 23 passed the screening criteria. Our six sites represented 50 percent of the refining finalists for the Distinguished Safety Award.

“It’s an honor to be selected by our competitors for these awards and a testament to the capability, dedication and teamwork of our people,” Ziemba said. “Congratulations to the Lake Charles Manufacturing Complex and our other finalists: Bayway, Billings, Rodeo, Santa Maria and Sweeny refineries.”

Recognizing the hard work Refining puts into staying safe reinforces the goal to work safely every day. Everyone wins when we go home to our families the way we came to work.
