Bayway’s role in powering the Northeast

Economic impact study reports how the Bayway Industrial Complex is contributing to jobs, energy security and regional growth.

A recent economic impact study conducted on the Bayway Industrial Complex showed that it:

  • Contributes $21.3 billion in statewide output.
  • Adds $7 billion in gross state product.
  • Supports 12,000 direct and indirect jobs in New Jersey.

This newly released study by the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and facilitated by the New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA), with participation from companies co-located at the complex, highlights the significant role it plays in supporting New Jersey’s economy and the broader Northeast region.

Why it matters: Third-party research like this reinforces how employees at Bayway and across Phillips 66 help add value to the economy, community well-being and energy reliability — locally and across the broader region.

The study examined the collective impact of companies co-located at the complex, including Phillips 66, Sunoco, Nexpera, Infineum and Linden Cogeneration.

Together, these companies play critical roles in refining, chemical manufacturing, environmental regeneration, power generation and fuel logistics — operations that are interconnected and vital to the economies of New Jersey and the broader Northeast region.

The findings were recently featured on News 12+’s Minding Your Business, which highlighted a press conference at the Bayway Industrial Complex where NJBIA President and CEO Michele Siekerka presented the report.

The program highlighted the Bayway Complex as an economic powerhouse for the region with commentary from Don Susanen, VP, Phillips 66 Bayway Refinery along with elected officials and local leaders.

Additionally, Lisa Barra, Public Affairs Advisor, and Brian McCarthy, Oil Movement Business Team Leader, two long-time Bayway Refinery employees, shared the profound impact the complex has had on their lives, and Michael Guinta, owner of Bayway Catering and operator of the complex’s cafeteria, emphasized the site’s influence on the local economy.

Segment begins around the 18-minute mark.
