Know What’s Below. Call 811 Before You Dig.

Phillips 66 proudly supports April’s Safe Digging Month and National 811 Day. By promoting the use of 811, these campaign initiatives aim to prevent accidental damage to underground utility lines, which can lead to costly repairs, service disruptions, and even serious injuries.

By calling 811 or visiting 811 before any excavation, you can ensure that you are aware of any underground utility lines in the area. This not only helps prevent costly damages, but also ensures the safety of yourself and those around you. It has been found that calling 8-1-1 before digging increases one’s chances of avoiding incidents, injuries, environmental harm, and event death.

We take a holistic approach to safety at Phillips 66, which involves prevention, maintenance, and emergency preparedness measures. Our company believes in the importance of continuous education and transparency when it comes to preventing pipeline incidents. We strive to keep our stakeholders informed about our pipelines and our policies, and we encourage an open dialogue to address any concerns or questions to prevent accidents and prioritize the safety of our communities and the environment.

811 is a national call-before-you-dig phone number that connects individual to a central call center where they can provide information about their excavation project.  Whether the project is small or large, there is no limit. Anyone who plans to dig must contact their states 811 a few days before the digging project. The call center then notifies the appropriate utility companies to come and mark the location of their underground lines. You may begin digging once you have confirmed all utilities at your worksite have been confirmed and your states recommended wait period has passed. It’s important to always call 811 before digging to ensure the safety of yourself and others, as well as to avoid potential fines or repairs. For more information, click below.

Be Aware of Underground Utility Lines

The flags in the ground indicate more than you realize; if you ever wonder what they meant, you should know what they mean.  Upon the confirmation of an underground digging project, locators come on the project site to mark the ground or pavement with a carefully arranged series of lines. Locators use specialized equipment and training to accurately mark the underground infrastructure, saving time and money for the project and avoiding potential hazards.

Knowing the color code system can help prevent accidents and damages to those underground utilities, as well as ensure the safety of workers and the surrounding community. The color code standards was established by the American Public Works Association. Excavators and contractors learn the code by heart, and stay aware of the markings whenever they work on underground projects.

The colors spelled out under the APWA Uniform Color Code standard are:

  • White – proposed excavation limits or routes.
  • Pink – temporary survey markings, unknown/unidentified facilities.
  • Red – electric power lines, cables, conduit, and lighting cables.
  • Yellow – natural gas, oil, steam, petroleum, or other flammable.
  • Orange – telecommunication, alarm or signal lines, cables or conduit.
  • Blue – potable drinking water.
  • Purple – reclaimed water, irrigation and slurry lines.
